Excited and pleased to have nine tremendous industry mentors joining us in May 2016 for the 2nd Annual Stowe Story Labs' Writers' Retreat:
Austin Chick – Screenwriter, Director, Creative Producer: Wrote and directed XX/XY, starring Mark Ruffalo; co-produced BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU’RE DEAD, directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, and Marisa Tomei; directed AUGUST, starring Josh Hartnett, Naomie Harris, Adam Scott, Rip Torn, and David Bowie; wrote and directed GIRLS AGAINST BOYS.
Jonathan Gray - Creative Producer and Production Counsel - A practicing attorney since 1990, Jonathan is a dedicated advocate for emerging and established producers, production entities, directors, writers, financiers and distributors in film, television and other media. He has served as production counsel for a vast number of independent films and television shows, guiding clients from rights acquisition through distribution. Jonathan as well has produced and executive produced several independent film productions.
Lauren Haber – Creative Producer and Head of Film and Television Development: Producer and head of film and television development for production company Parts & Labor; oversaw production of critically-acclaimed, award-winning films including Robert Eggers' THE WITCH, Josh Marston's COMPLETE UNKNOWN, Matt Ross's FRANK & LOLA, Ira Sachs' LOVE IS STRANGE, Bob Edwards' WHEN I LIVE MY LIFE OVER AGAIN, David Lowery's AIN'T THEM BODIES SAINTS, Shaul Schwarz's NARCO CULTURA, Julia Loktev's THE LONELIEST PLANET.
Academy Award Nominated Amy Hobby – Creative Producer: With ten Sundance premieres to her credit (including SECRETARY, NADJA, HAMLET), Amy more recently began producing high-profile documentary films, which include Steven Soderbergh’s AND EVERYTHING IS GOING FINE about monologist Spalding Gray; LET’S TALK ABOUT; and Academy Award nominated director Liz Garbus’ HBO documentary about Marilyn Monroe called LOVE, MARILYN. Amy most recently produced Liz Garbus’ documentary about the incomparable Nina Simone, WHAT HAPPENED? MISS SIMONE, which premiered at Sundance on opening night, was nominated for an Academy Award and won this year's Peabody Award for Best Documentary.
Anne Hubbell – Creative Producer: In addition to a storied career as a Creative Producer, Anne is as well Vice President of Motion Picture & Consumer Films at Eastman Kodak, where she works with studio and independent movies of all budgets, episodic content and commercials, and is a liaison to the international film community at large. She is a 20-year industry veteran and currently serves on the boards of New York Women in Film & Television, the New York Production Alliance and Rooftop Films, and is a member of the Producer’s Guild of America.
Elizabeth Kaiden - Development Executive and Dramatist: A Co-Founder of The Writers Lab for women screenwriters over 40 and IRIS, a script development cooperative dedicated to the proliferation of the female voice in narrative film, Elizabeth has evaluated scripts for a wide range of writers and directors, from New Dramatists, to Hamptons International Film Festival, to Moxie Firecracker Films, to Miramax.
Paul Miller - Executive Producer, Creative Producer: Paul Miller is an independent producer working in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. He is currently based in Amsterdam. Until 2014 Miller was Director of Film Financing at the the Doha Film Institute in Qatar, where among other responsibilities Paul managed a $40M international film financing portfolio. A small sample of the films Miller produced include THE BIRDER’S GUIDE TO EVERYTHING, starring Ben Kingsley; BABYGIRL, produced with Samson Films and the Irish Film Board; the documentary, POOR CONSUELO CONQUERS THE WORLD, with Les Films d’Ici /ARTE; SNOW ANGELS (2006), written and directed by David Gordon Green and starring Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale; and the Golden Globe nominated, A LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG (2004) starring John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson.
Chris Millis – Screenwriter, Novelist: Chris adapted and executive produced his debut novel, ‘Small Apartments’ into a cult film that made its World Premiere at the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival and is distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures. The film, directed by Jonas Akerlund, stars Matt Lucas, Billy Crystal, Johnny Knoxville, James Caan, Rebel Wilson, and many more. Currently, Chris is the Distinguished Visiting Professor and Writer in Residence, teaching screenwriting and fiction, at Sierra Nevada College in Lake Tahoe. Learn more about Chris Millis
Ellen Parks, C.S.A – Casting Director: Ellen has thirty years of professional casting experience. She has done casting for Martin Scorsese, Alexander Payne, David O. Russell, Joel and Ethan Coen, George Romero, David Letterman and Debra Granik, in addition to working with numerous emerging talents. Ellen’s work is noted for high-profile ensemble casts (Flirting With Disaster, Grey Gardens), as well as for the introduction of new, lesser known and re-emerging talent (Sideways, Secretary, Down to the Bone, Spanking The Monkey, Manny & Lo, SongCatcher).
David Pope – Program Director: David is a screenwriter and director working internationally. He is the annual consultant / moderator for the Rotterdam Lab at CineMart. David is the director of Advance Films, with whom he has slate of projects as screenwriter and director and is currently in final development with his feature film THE BELONGING. Directing credits include the award winning feature film MILES FROM NOWHERE. Script development and / or training design and delivery clients include: BFI, UK Film Council, BBC, BAFTA, National Theatre, British Council, Creative Europe, Cannes Cinefondation, Warp Films, Allfilm, Wajda School, Edinburgh International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Polish Film Institute, Media Business School, Cannes Film Festival, Film London, Lionhead Studios, Xingu Films, Irish Film Board, FAS Screen Training Ireland, Filmbase, MEDIA, Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, New Horizons Studio, Estonian Film Institute, London Film Academy and London University amongst many others. David works as well as a script consultant on single projects and slates worldwide, including work with Academy Award and BAFTA nominated producers and screenwriters.
