Coming of Age Feature Film
In the early summer of 2004, four childhood friends reunite at the beach shortly after high school graduation as they face decisions that will change their lives forever.
SYNOPSIS
In the beginning of summer 2004 childhood friends: Jenna, Kira, Mark and Elliot head to the beach following their High School graduation for what is locally known as Senior Week. As they settle in, word gets around the richest girl in school, Ashley Martin, is throwing the party to end all parties and each character is invited for different reasons. Mark, the quiet loner, has connection to party favors. Jenna, the soon to be Ivy Leaguer is personally invited by the host. Her best friend Kira, doesn’t believe she’d be invited if it weren’t for Jenna. Elliot, a recent army recruit tags along with his unit where he must face his former best friend, Mark. What begins as a carefree get away quickly becomes a tense and shocking farewell to childhood innocence.
The Why. Writer & Director Statement
I find myself more and more concerned with the state of young people. How do they feel about their futures? How much does online life play a role in the way they view their place in the world? When I graduated high school in 2004 the internet was still fairly new. In college, my freshman year dorm room didn't have wifi and yet I still remember the pressure to live up to a certain ideal and this was without constant bombardment from a device in my pocket. Twenty years later I see the rising popularity of y2k culture and a resurgence of love for everything from the 2000s. My concerns for the current generation are what every prior generation has warned: don't repeat the same mistake of the past. Though the 2000s gave us incredible music, fashion, movies and art it was also a deeply homophobic and misogynistic environment to come of age in. It was a time where deep division began to sow its roots with the fall out from the Iraq War. I fear that forgetting those things will allow them to resurface. Today we're seeing more and more attacks on LGBTQ+ people, misogyny runs rampant on podcasts and social media, the country feels more divided than ever. My hope is young people will see themselves in this film, feel the universal experience of the pain of growing up, and learn from where we have been.
